Remember what prof. Maja said about that summer school in Romania?? Here some general info:

"We are pleased to announce this year's Central European Summer School
in Generative Grammar, to be held in:

Cluj, Romania

from July 26th - August 6th

Registration is taking place from May 10th until May 21st at

The school is free (there is no tuition fee), and dorm beds will be
approximately 5 Euros per night. Students from former communist
countries in Central and Eastern Europe can apply for financial
support (covering travel, visa and/or accommodation expenses).

Sprechen Sie, kako molim???

Trinaestogodišnja devojčica iz Knina probudila se pre dve nedelje iz kome i umesto maternjim, progovorila tečnim nemačkim jezikom, prenose hrvatski mediji.
Pored pedijatara, devojčicu su pregledali bolnički defektolog i psiholog, ali uzrok promene jezika još ne znaju, preneo je hrvatski list "24 sata" koji navodi da je, posle kome, devojčica znala nemački mnogo bolje no što ga je mogla naučiti u školi.

Devojčica je primljena u splitsku bolnicu pre dva mesecaa zbog trovanja krvi.
Neuropsihijatar i sudski veštak Mijo Milas ističe da je ovaj slučaj medicinski neobjašnjiv, a dolazi iz duboke podsvesti.
 
"Mnogo toga se može se sačuvati duboko u mozgu mladog čoveka, tako da je devojčica mogla percipirati nemački jezik iz okoline ili školskih lekcija daleko više nego što se očekivalo ili što je izgovarala. Moguće je da je bila i mentalno povezana s nekim ko je izučavao u njenoj blizini taj jezik", ukazao je neuropsihijatar.
 
Milas podseća da su i u mnogobrojnoj literaturi opisani ljudi koji su povratkom iz nesvesnog stanja progovorili drevnim jezicima.

Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?
Why are they called apartments, when they're all stuck together?
Why do scientists call it research when looking for something new?
Why do they call it a building? It looks like they're finished. Why isn't it a built?
Why is it when you transport something by car, it's called a shipment, but when you transport something by ship, it's called cargo?
If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?
If price and worth mean the same thing, why priceless and worthless are opposites?
Is there another word for synonym?
Is it possible to be totally partial?

The Glitch

Dear followers, 

Here is what Elizabeth said:

First, a reminder:

I will be in my office from 10am-12pm tomorrow (Monday) morning to sign indexes and discuss final grades.  I will also sign indexes on the first day of classes.

Secondly:

I know you are all anxiously awaiting your final grades. Unfortunately, for long and very boring reasons I need to scan a printout of my records in order to send you your grades in electronic form.  Of course, following Murphy's Law, my scanner has decided that this is an excellent time to stop working and it is not interested in any attempts to coax it into a functional state.  Ain't technology grand?

I will track down a working scanner tomorrow and hopefully be able to send you something by Tuesday morning.

Cornerteers

Dear followers,
 
The American Corners in Novi Sad is looking for a regular person to work for the Kid's Corner on Friday afternoons- 5pm-6pm.  They need someone who is good with children, likes to read to them and facilitate with games and other activities.  If you are interested, please contact Prof G who can put you in touch with them.  
It's not a paid job but you will get perks like food, free internet, and more book and magazine privileges.  In addition, you will get to meet and spend time with the awesome coordinators there, Milicia and Marko!  If you are interested in teaching at the elementary level or you are interested in small agency/non-profit work, this could be a nice way to get some work experience as well.

Elizabeth Reports More Precisely...

Clarification:
Jacquie and I will be examining our own students for the oral exam and we have both posted sign-up sheets. You will be doing the exam in pairs, so the sign up sheets are there so you can choose your own partners and approximately when you would like to take the exam. For my groups, there will be two sessions, one from 10.00-12.00 and one from 13.00-15.00. Please check the list at the beginning of your session just in case I have to make some adjustments and PLEASE be on time. If you are late you will lose your place and you will have to wait for the end of the session.

For those of you who missed it, I will be giving a make-up listening test at 12.00.  You may only come if you were not able to make the original date.

N-N-News!!!

Dear NJV 1 Students,

Professor Jacqueline Gardy will be hosting an oral practice session for all NJV 1 students this Thursday, January 21st at 20,00, to meet at the entrance of the Faculty.  If you did not attend last week's session, please try to make this one.  Those that went last week were able to get in a lot of practice and feel much more comfortable with the exercise.  Professor Gardy is also looking for 5 teaching assistants to conduct this workshop, so if you came last week, please consider being a TA for this week's session.  Please contact her directly about the teaching assistantship gig at jgardy.serbia(at)gmail(dot)com. 

For all others, please come if you feel you need extra support for the oral exam.  For those that went last week, it will be the same this week.
